Marine transgression

The landward migration of a shoreline. This could be due to global sea level rise (e.g. melting land ice or changing ocean basin volume) or changes to the shape of a coastline – i.e. this can reflect global or local/regional changes. The inverse, the seaward movement of a shoreline, is known as a marine regression.
