Stephen Jay Gould

Stephen Jay Gould (September 10, 1941–May 20, 2002) was an American evolutionary biologist and palaeontologist. Among his most important contributions was the theory of punctuated equilibrium, which proposes that evolution is characterized by long periods of relative stability and short bursts of rapid change. He also wrote a number of books on natural history and evolution that helped to popularize these subjects.
