{"id":3279,"date":"2014-07-01T00:01:54","date_gmt":"2014-06-30T23:01:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.palaeontologyonline.com\/?p=3279"},"modified":"2019-01-01T13:45:18","modified_gmt":"2019-01-01T13:45:18","slug":"perspectives-three-years-palaeontology-still-online","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.palaeontologyonline.com\/?p=3279","title":{"rendered":"Perspectives: Three years on, palaeontology still online"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>by the <a href=\"https:\/\/34.32.27.218\/about\/\">Palaeontology [online] team<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Palaeontology and the history of life are topics that capture the imaginations of children and adults alike, many of whom are keen to learn all about the latest weird wonders discovered by science. Communicating cutting-edge research to the public can be difficult, however, partly because scientists tend to publish their results in technical papers aimed at other scientists, but also because these papers are generally not freely available to non-academics \u2014 although the growth of <a title=\"Open access\" href=\"https:\/\/34.32.27.218\/glossary\/o\/open-access\/\">open access<\/a> means that this is improving in many countries. Popular-science writers provide accurate and accessible summaries of some of the most topical work, but can cover only a fraction of the research carried out by palaeontologists, naturally focusing on current stories rather than the wealth of knowledge already out there. Moreover, misrepresentations of palaeontologists\u2019 work are commonplace in the mainstream media, with research results often reported incorrectly, or lacking essential context. Taken together, all this hampers the public understanding of Earth history and contributes to the denial of evolution and climate change.<\/p>\n<p>These issues were foremost in our thoughts when we set up Palaeontology [online] in 2011. The goal of the site is to publish monthly articles on palaeontology and related topics, written by experts, but understandable to secondary\/high-school students and non-specialist adults. All of these articles are free to access, ensuring that anyone, anywhere in the world can read them whenever they want \u2014 all they need is an internet connection. The website, which is supported by the <a title=\"Palaeontological Association\" href=\"https:\/\/34.32.27.218\/glossary\/p\/palaeontological-association\/\">Palaeontological Association<\/a>, officially launched to the public in July 2011 with an article by Alistair McGowan about <a href=\"https:\/\/34.32.27.218\/articles\/2011\/biodiversity-more-than-just-how-many-species\/\">biodiversity<\/a>. Since then, we have published a total of 37 articles, which have been seen by more than 60,000 unique visitors from 179 countries (Fig. 1). This has included groups that most people have heard of, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/34.32.27.218\/articles\/2012\/fossil-focus-pterosaurs\/\">pterosaurs<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/34.32.27.218\/articles\/2012\/fossil-focus-marsupials\/\">marsupials<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/34.32.27.218\/articles\/2013\/fossil-focus-trilobites\/\">trilobites<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/34.32.27.218\/articles\/2013\/fossil-focus-encephalized-bipedal-apes\/\">apes<\/a>, as well as much less familiar forms, including ancient <a href=\"https:\/\/34.32.27.218\/articles\/2012\/fossil-focus-animal-embryos\/\">animal embryos<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/34.32.27.218\/articles\/2013\/the-evolution-of-tree-kangaroos\/\">tree-kangaroos<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/34.32.27.218\/articles\/2013\/fossil-focus-heterostraci\/\">heterostracans<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/34.32.27.218\/articles\/2014\/fossil-focus-placodonts\/\">placodonts<\/a>. The site has featured a range of articles about fossil <a title=\"Arthropods\" href=\"https:\/\/34.32.27.218\/glossary\/a\/arthropods\/\">arthropods<\/a> \u2014 which is no surprise, given that the group encompasses the majority of all species alive today \u2014 notably <a href=\"https:\/\/34.32.27.218\/articles\/2011\/fossil-focus-arachnida\/\">arachnids<\/a> (for example spiders and scorpions), <a href=\"https:\/\/34.32.27.218\/articles\/2011\/fossil-focus-pycnogonida\/\">pycnogonids<\/a> (sea spiders), <a href=\"https:\/\/34.32.27.218\/articles\/2011\/fossil-focus-chasmataspidida\/\">chasmataspids<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/34.32.27.218\/articles\/2012\/fossil-focus-xiphosura\/\">xiphosurans<\/a> (horseshoe crabs), all of which belong to a larger grouping called the <a href=\"https:\/\/34.32.27.218\/articles\/2011\/fossil-focus-chelicerata\/\">chelicerates<\/a>. There are also a number of articles covering broader topics, but with a particular focus on the fossil record, including <a href=\"https:\/\/34.32.27.218\/articles\/2011\/fossil-focus-coal-swamps\/\">coal swamps<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/34.32.27.218\/articles\/2012\/fossil-focus-vertebrate-tracks-and-trackways\/\">vertebrate tracks<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/34.32.27.218\/articles\/2012\/fossil-focus-the-preservation-of-colour\/\">the preservation of colour<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/34.32.27.218\/articles\/2012\/fossil-focus-plant-fossils\/\">plants and past environments<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/34.32.27.218\/articles\/2013\/patterns-in-palaeontology-development-in-the-fossil-record\/\">animal development<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/34.32.27.218\/articles\/2013\/patterns-in-palaeontology-exceptional-preservation-of-fossils-in-concretions\/\">concretions<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/34.32.27.218\/articles\/2014\/fossil-focus-eggs-nests-dinosaur-reproduction\/\">dinosaur eggs<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/34.32.27.218\/articles\/2014\/fossil-focus-arthropod-plant-interactions\/\">the interactions between arthropods and plants<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3285\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3285\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/static.palaeontologyonline.com\/Figure2_perspectives.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3285 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/static.palaeontologyonline.com\/Figure2_perspectives.png\" alt=\"Figure 2 \u2014 Images from selected Fossil Focus articles from the last three year. These include <a href=\"https:\/\/34.32.27.218\/articles\/2011\/the-paleocene-eocene-thermal-maximum\/\">the Paleocence\u2013Eocene Thermal Maximum<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/34.32.27.218\/articles\/2012\/the-cambrian-explosion-paradoxes-and-possible-worlds\/\">the Cambrian explosion<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/34.32.27.218\/articles\/2012\/patterns-in-palaeontology-the-first-3-billion-years-of-evolution\/\">the origin of life<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/34.32.27.218\/articles\/2014\/trends-body-size-evolution-fossil-record-growing-field\/\">body-size evolution<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/34.32.27.218\/articles\/2014\/patterns-in-palaeontology-the-latitudinal-biodiversity-gradient\/\">the latitudinal biodiversity gradient<\/a>.
