Before starting his PhD, he completed his undergraduate at Trinity College Dublin in natural science and his masters at the University of Bristol, UK, in palaeobiology. His research interests include Carboniferous ecology, early tetrapod evolution and functional morphology, and computed-tomography techniques in palaeontology.
